Auto Crash Kills Negro Minister

E. L. Stone, 63 year-old Negro preacher and former pastor of the Lily Hill Baptist Church of Talladega, was one of the 2 persons accidentally killed in Alabama over the July Fourth holiday. He died Tuesday night from injuries received in an accident Sunday six miles north of Anniston. The Rev. Stone was returning to his home in Rome, Ga., after a visit here with relatives and friends.

Lilly Mae Carson, 47 of Rome was also killed in the two-car collision. Members of the family here said the Rev. Stone had preached a short sermon at the Lily Hill Baptist Church Sunday night and was on his way home when the accident occurred. Another occupant of the car, Classic Young, is in Memorial Hospital in Anniston. The Rev. Stone was serving as pastor of the St. Peter’s Baptist Church in Rome and of a Baptist Church in Buchanan, Ga.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Kidd of Talladega and Mrs. Erlene Watts of Eclectic; three sons, Abraham of Detroit, Otis of California and Ollie of Talladega; one brother, Bud of Talladega; and two sisters, Mrs. Missouri Hambric and Mrs. Annie Phillips of Birmingham. Funeral services will be held in Talladega but arrangements are not complete.
